Tigray TV Journalists Kidnapped Investigating Gold Mining

Three journalists from Tigray Television have reportedly been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen while investigating illegal gold mining activities in the North West Zone of the Tigray Region, Ethiopia.
The incident occurred on the morning of December 29, 2024, at approximately 9:00 AM, in a village near Meyli in Asgede Woreda.
The journalists were en route to report on the illicit mining operations, focusing on their environmental and social impacts, including the harmful chemicals used in gold extraction and their effects on local communities.
According to Tigray TV, the team had spent three days on the ground, gathering testimonies from residents about the significant damage caused by these activities.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen intercepted the journalists and ordered them to halt their investigative work before abducting them.
Tigray Television stated that all communication with the journalists ceased shortly after 10:00 AM, as their phones were turned off.
Efforts are underway to locate the journalists and ensure their safety, but no further details about their whereabouts or the identity of the kidnappers have been disclosed.
The incident has intensified concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Tigray, which is also grappling with political instability and power struggles.
Relations between the Tigray interim administration, led by President Getachew Reda, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), chaired by Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, have soured in recent months.
Both factions have traded accusations of misconduct and criminal activities. President Getachew Reda has alleged that factions loyal to Dr. Debretsion are attempting to seize power, exploit mineral resources illegally, and incite violence.
Conversely, Dr. Debretsion’s group has accused the interim administration of treason, corruption, and lawlessness.
This political discord has created a volatile environment, exacerbating security challenges in the region.
The kidnapping of journalists highlights the risks faced by media professionals working in conflict-affected areas and underscores the urgent need for accountability and protection of press freedom in Ethiopia.
As the Tigray interim administration and other stakeholders continue their efforts to stabilize the region, the safe return of the abducted journalists remains a priority.
Tigray Television has called on the authorities to take swift action to ensure their safety and bring those responsible to justice.
